Fade of the Day – Archival Rucksack (3.5 Years Old)

Fade-of-the-Day-Archival-Rucksack-Front-Belt

It’s not every day that our Fade of the Day features involve wax, but it’s time to change that with this three and a half-year-old Archival Rucksack. Sent in by a Heddels reader, he mentioned his appreciation for the quality built into the bag as it is showing minimal stress after all this time, aside from a couple wear marks and some of the bottom stitching beginning to separate.

He recently re-waxed the bag this year, and by the looks of it, he won’t be slowing down the wear anytime soon. The only bummer is that Archival recently announced they are stepping down from the production side of their brand, but will continue to exist as a blog, making this fade not only timely but also commemorative.

3sixteen-12oz-Japanese-Selvedge-Twill-Chino-Khaki-Front-Close-Up

Selvedge is a term often used interchangeably (and incorrectly) with denim. But selvedge can come in all kinds of fabrics, not just denim. 3sixteen recognizes that, while you may not want to wear your dungarees everyday, you prefer your coffee black and your fabrics selvedge.

Made with Japanese selvedge twill, their latest trio of 12oz. chinos allow you to stunt on your co-workers while maintaining some level of professionalism. They feature slash front pockets, classic welt pocketing at the rear, and urea buttons at the fly. It’s a fit that lies nicely between their SL and ST fits. If that’s not familiar to you, just know that they’re a healthy slim fit and come in three flavors: olive, khaki, and black.

Available at Snake Oil Provisions for $230.

Snazzy finished products often get the glory, but just like an exceptional meal, the jackets, jeans, and boots that we all love to ogle start with exceptional materials. One such manufacturer is Seven Senses, an Indian-based company that manages the entire supply chain and manufacturing process to create responsibly handmade fabrics.

Hand-spun, hand-woven, and hand-dyed, Seven Senses’ Khadi denim has tons of character. Left Field has even used Khadi denim in the past. Seven Senses selvedge often includes gold and silver zari (the metallic thread often used in brocade on saris) as a nod to their own heritage being woven into the diverse end uses of their material.

Shown here is their latest lookbook, with an emphasis on the progressive, fashion-forward side of their business. The Seven Senses website also provides more details on the behind-the-scenes process and the heritage of their methods. Fun fact: Khadi fabric was central to Ghandi’s efforts to empower Indian economic and social traditions.

Expect to see these fabrics in the coming season from home sewers and niche brands alike. Check out the Seven Senses’ website for more.

Fade-of-the-Day-Blue-Owl-x-Momotaro-BOM008-S-Skinny-Straight-Front-Back

Prepare to go to battle with today’s fade, an electric blue pair of Momotaro featuring the brand’s distinctive “battle stripes.” This pair of Momotaro x Blue Owl BOM008 jeans has been taken to task over the last two and a half years by Robert Leahr, with repair work by NYC’s Denim Therapy.

That said, he’s not put them through serious abuse; Robert works 8-4 in front of a computer. The most strenuous work these jeans get is when he walks his dogs in them.

It just goes to show that you don’t need to fall off a skateboard or go cliff diving to achieve wonderful fades. The high contrast on these is helped out by the sulphur dyed black weft. The heavyweight denim also produced some cracking whiskers and honeycombs. The battle stripes are equally special too, as they’re beneath the pockets and have come through with wear.

Limited-time offer: if your denim is need of some much-needed TLC, you are in luck! Until September 5th, 2016, Heddels readers receive 20% off all of Denim Therapy‘s services (excluding shipping). Simply head over to their site and use the promo code, “Heddels16”.

Edwin-Menswear-AW2016-Lookbook-1

While most of us are basking in toasty warm weather here in the Northern Hemisphere, Fall/Winter ’16 is upon the fashion world. So far, across the board, we’ve been seeing lots of retro-workwear inspired jackets, and Japanese denim etc. Edwin‘s non-denim side has got the memo.

Watch caps, a lightweight jacket with a retro auto mechanic silhouette, and shirt-jacs abound. True to Edwin’s understated style, classic neutral colors and natural fabrics prevail – chambray, wool, twill, in forest green, charcoal grey, and olive.

Coming soon to Edwin Europe’s site.

Fade Friday – Iron Heart 21 oz. 555 Fit (2 Years, 4 Washes)

Fade-Friday-Iron-Heart-21-oz-555-Fit-Front-Back

It’s Friday folks, and that means it’s time to wind down and transition into weekend mode starting with some killer fades sent to us by Alex (and courtesy of London’s Rivet & Hide). He wore these Iron Heart 21oz. 555‘s for the last two years of adventuring, including working on his bike and jumping the occasional barbed wire fence.

The results are a prime example of the fading potential for any Iron Heart 21oz. denim–the deadly combo of high contrasting fades with notable areas such as the insane honeycombs happening here. I’ve said it before, but we tend to see the gnarliest combs on more slim fitting jeans (no surprise, when you think about it) and these are a great example being one of IH’s slimmer fits.

Alex says these are his go-to jeans when he’s out and about, and we hope to see how they look in another couple of years!

Fade of the Day – Obbi Good Label Natural Condor Mid Wallet (3.5 Years)

Fade-of-the-Day-Obbi-Good-Label-Condor-Mid-Wallet-Front-Back

Today’s Fade of the Day features some awesome veg tan love in the form of an Obbi Good Label Natural Condor Mid Wallet sent to us by Florian Wuersch from somewhere in the US of A. After three and a half years of regular use mixed with an occasional mink oil lather, the patina has fully developed into a dark brown on the outside.

However, the most interesting patina on this piece lies within the interior. Years of money and cards being stored in inner slots on the wallet have made for some really interesting and personalized marks that really show the leather’s character.

Obbi has since changed some minor details of this wallet (e.g. concho, inner cardholder layout), but still offer it for sale today, ready to be worn into patina retirement.

Poglia-Custom-Indigo-Dyed-Natural-Veg-Tan-Porter-Bag-3

The folks over at Poglia know a thing or two about leather bags, and have just expanded their offerings via a recent collaboration with Buaisou Studios in Brooklyn. The concept is simple – they took their Natural Veg-Tan Porter Bag and dip dyed it in indigo. But this isn’t your average bucket-o-dye, in fact it is quite the opposite.

Buaisou prides themselves on using the traditional Japanese methods of 100% natural indigo dying, that includes the complex fermentation of ash lye, calcium hydroxide, and wheat bran with Sukumo indigo leaves. The results are a beautiful and authentic blue that complements the natural veg tan leather to create a one of a kind piece. The bag itself is made up of high quality materials with minimal seams for added durability and unique style. This bag also features outer straps that nicely hold your favorite wide-brim hat in place.

Available for purchase as soon as it finishes drying (next week) for $700 at Poglia.

Iron-Heart-IH-814-Wabash-Stripe-Black-Wabash-Painter's-Pants-Front-Back

All you kids with summer jobs painting houses might want to come to work with the proper pants. Introducing the Iron Heart IH-814 Wabash Stripe Painters Pant – a utility inspired pant with enough pockets to get the job done, no matter what that may be.

Offered in three colorways including indigo and black, the most unique has got to be the white with reactive dyed blue dot wabash pants. According to Iron Heart, this is the only pair that won’t fade, although you can expect more of a patina when you’re wearing white jeans anyways I suppose.

All three combos are made with 100% cotton fabric and include all the good details like felled side seams, triple needle construction, and a zipper fly. While you don’t have to be a painter to wear them, you can rest easy knowing they are capable of a hard days work no problem.

Available from $295-$325 at Iron Heart.

Fade-of-the-Day-Lee-101-Rider-Slim-Fit-Front-Back

Stay-at-home Dad, Johannes Luttrén, from Sweden sent in his faded out Lee 101 Rider Slim Fit jeans. Cut from premium indigo denim and available in various washes, the Rider is described as a slim fit that’s perfectly balanced between relaxed and skinny.

He’s been wearing them daily for the better part of two years and has yet to wash or soak them. So far his jeans have some tight honeycombs and deep fades showing on the knees and backside. Not surprisingly he’s needed to make minor repairs to the crotch and knees. The whiskering and stress points in the front pockets give these jeans a unique look that Johannes should be proud of.

INT. MOMOTARO HQ BREAKROOM – DAY

Tabuchi prepares a pot of tea. Kishimoto enters wearing a chambray western shirt, he peeks over Tabuchi’s shoulder.

Kishimoto: “Can I get in on a cup of that?”

Tabuchi: “You always do this! You just mooch off of my teapot without ever doing any of the work yourself!”

Kishimoto: “Oh c’mon, remember that time I made ramen?”

Tabuchi: “How could I forget!? You bring it up every time you’ve wanted tea for the last two years.”

Kishimoto: “You’ve got more than enough for yourself, don’t be greedy!”

Kishimoto grabs for the teapot and Tabuchi pulls out of his reach.

Tabuchi: “No, not this time!”

Kishimoto gets his hand on the handle. They both struggle for control of the teapot. Tabuchi loses his grip, causing Kishimoto to stagger back with the pot, spilling the tea all over his shirt.

Tabuchi: “There! Are you happy now, it’s all yours!”

Kishimoto: “Well it’s not my cup of tea.”

Tabuchi: “You’re damn right it isn’t.”

We’d like to imagine this was the scene at Momotaro HQ when they dreamed up dyeing one of their signature Western Shirts in green tea. Their indigo 5oz. chambray perfectly soaks up the mild green hue of the matcha, making for a deep cast garment that’s also rich in antioxidants.

Get your own (plus a bag of the tea they were dyed in) for $175 at Okayama Denim.

Got a blown out crotch? Today’s fade certainly does, but that doesn’t mean these jeans aren’t a doozy. This pair of Jean Shop Slim Fit jeans has been worn hard by Daniel F. of New York State for four years, from the date they were made on July 2, 2008, until the fall of 2012, when the crotch blew out for the third time.

Daniel wore them while drumming in his band and even spilled beer on them while on stage. After much rambling in these, they’ve been retired to take their place with the fallen jeans of denim Valhalla.

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

The Olympics are in full swing, and what better encouragement do you need to hit the pool? But hey, even if you aren’t a swimmer, at least you can look great in a new pair of trunks. Swimsuits can be extremely divisive, but with the summer coming to a close now is the perfect time to find the right swimsuit for you at a great price.

1) President’s: Yasawa Bathing Suit

Swim-Trunks-Five-Plus-One-1-President's-Yasawa-Bathing-Suit

First up is President’s Yasawa Bathing Suit, which has a unique (although contentious) pattern. For many in search of a swimsuit, the pattern is everything; however, this one is paired with custom branded snap closures and made-in-Italy quality, which sets it apart from much of the competition.

Available for $90 from Need Supply.

2) Vilebrequin: Swimming Costume in Ultramarine

Swim-Trunks-Five-Plus-One-2-Vilebrequin-Swimming-Costume-in-Ultramarine

Vilebrequin is known for being one of the nicest brands in swimwear, and their Swimming Costume in Ultramarine certainly shows the attention to detail that has earned them such praise. These trunks feature and almost hand-painted looking pattern, which is paired with a drawstring closure and elastic waistband.

Available for $295 from Vilebrequin.

3) Onia: Charles Trunk 7″ in Black & White Striped Leaves

Swim-Trunks-Five-Plus-One-Onia-Charles-Trunk-7-in-Black-&-White-Striped-Leaves

Onia might not be a household name in the fashion industry, but their swimsuits are top notch. Their 7″ Charles Trunk in Black & White Striped Leaves is constructed from a high-tech fabric that is fast drying and has great color fastness. It’s made with an ultra-fine mesh lining and custom patina-ed nickel hardware, which adds to the aesthetic.

Available for $137 from Onia

4) Atalaye: Geroko Coral

Swim-Trunks-Five-Plus-One-4-Atalaye-Geroko-Coral

Atalaye’s Geroko Coral swim trunks feature a pastel-red/white stripe, drawstring closure, and slightly shorter-than-average length; they might not be for everyone, but they are certainly a classic. The mesh lining in these trunks has a slight foam-like texture, which makes them even more comfortable.

Available for €89 from Atalaye.

5) Patagonia: Baggies 5″ Shorts

patagonia-shorts

Say what you will about tech-wear brands, but they make some of the best swim trunks on the market. Patagonia’s 5″ Baggies trunks are about as basic as you can get, guaranteeing you can keep breaking it out season after season after season.

Available for $49 from Patagonia.

Plus One – Orlebar Brown: Bulldog Traveler in Menton

Swim-Trunks-Five-Plus-One-6-Orlebar-Brown-Bulldog-Traveler-in-Menton

Last but certainly not least are the Bulldog Travelers from Orlebar, another high-end swimsuit maker known for their quality construction and unique designs. These trunks feature a scenic print that is continuous between the legs and pockets plus waist tabs to ensure proper fit (a rarely seen detail on swim trunks). The price may seem a bit high for a swimsuit, but the uniqueness of this piece certainly sets it apart from many others on the market.

Available for $207 from Unionmade Goods.
