Naked & Famous Scratch-n-Sniff Evergreen Jeans

Canook-Naked-&-Famous-WeirdGuy-Canadian-Pine-Scratch-Indigo-Selvedge

Naked & Famous has many claims to fame and believe it or not, scratch-n-sniff denim is one of them. Previous smellgoods have included raspberry and mint, and the latest to take the stage is Canadian pine; a collaboration with Canook, a retailer in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The fabric itself is a 12.65 oz. right hand twill rope dyed Japanese denim, in their Weird Guy fit: a medium rise slim fit with a taper from the knee down. Rumor has it the smell will last for up to five washes. We can neither confirm nor deny whether lining your dresser with pine boughs will help preserve the effect.

Available from Canook for $168CAD (~$128USD).

Indigo-People-AW16-Handloomed-and-Hand-dyed-Accessories-Akio-Tee

The Indigo People are at it again. Northern Europe’s blue dye masters combine artisanal dyeing methods from the world with our favorite hue for all sorts of accessories, tees, and scarves. Their latest collection takes their hand-produced nature a step further with a selection of goods that’s even hand-loomed.

The patterns are all crafted with traditional batik technique – the artworks are stamped or printed with hot wax to resist dye during the indigo dyeing process. The process isn’t mechanically perfect, so no two pieces are exactly alike.

Euro denim store Tenue de Nîmes and sunglass brand Dick Moby recently teamed up to offer some denim related and eco-friendly shades – the Indigo-Inspired Recycled Plastic Sunglasses. During several surfing trips to Bali, Morroco, Central America, and Europe, Dick Moby co-founder Robbert Wefers Bettink and his team noticed a shocking amount of plastic waste being dumped on shores worldwide every day. Gears began to turn and soon enough, the brand was formed with the hope of leaving a positive impact on the Earth’s ecosystem unlike many other producers.

Enter their latest release, constructed from 100% recycled plastic and offered with two different shades of blue lenses made by Zeiss to perfectly handle the Dutch summer climate. The frames show the brand’s heritage awareness with some modern twists, and include a carrying case for when you need to switch pairs.

Fade-of-the-Day-SuperDry-Japan-Front-Back

While you haven’t seen us cover much of anything by SuperDry Japan before, we feel these unknown model jeans earned their spot at Fade of the Day. Worn by Samuel Dwima in Indonesia for over seven months of cycling and college studies, the fades are subtle in contrast but still strong in appearance.

The more notable areas include the tight and consistent honeycombs behind the knee and the back pocket wallet fades. Samuel hopes to give these bad boys a sea wash soon, which will only make the fades that much more unique.

SuperDry Japan Unknown Model

  • Fabric: Cotton selvedge denim
  • Weight: unknown
  • Fit: Tapered
  • Unique Features:
    • Selvedge details everywhere including the coin pocket, back pockets, belt loops, etc?!

Truman-Boot-Company-Iceberg-Kudu-Leather-Made-to-Order-Boots-Front

Truman Boot Company have had some solid releases over the past few months, but this one might beat them all in the uniqueness department. Their new Iceberg Kudu Leather Boots are made with antelope leather from southern Africa that prove to be both supple and strong with an unlike-any-other (leather) look. Part of their interesting appearance is due to the tanning process, which was originally designed to maximize mellowness of calf skin. Pair this with a full wax impregnation process and the grain marks show through beautifully.

All leather facts aside, one of the coolest parts about these boots is that they are made to order and therefore totally customizable, with a full range of soles, toe styles, and hardware options to choose from.

Available starting at $500 at Truman Boot Company.

Pure-Blue-Japan-14oz-Deep-Indigo-Selvedge-Slim-Fit-Work-Pants-Front-Back

Pure Blue Japan are out pushing the boundaries of old and new, and have mashed the two perfectly with their latest release. The 14oz. Deep Indigo Selvedge Slim Fit Work Pants are made using PBJ original Japanese slub selvedge denim in a very deep indigo that will surely make for some righteous fades over time.

They combine certain aspects of classic work pants such as the buckle back with leather-backed rivets, hammer loop, and trouser hem with a more modern silhouette. They have been washed once so there’s no shrinkage left, and so you don’t crock your shoes (as much) blue.

Available for $275 at Blue In Green.

Self-Edge-x-trike-Gold-Wavy-Standard-Short-Slub-Selvedge-Jeans-Front-Back

After carrying the brand for years, the guys at Self Edge decided it was time to strike up a collaborative pair of jeans with Japan’s own Strike Gold. The results are something we have never seen before, and goes by the name of Wavy Standard Short Slub Selvedge Jeans.

The two teams spent a good amount of effort focusing on the development of a unique and exclusive denim for the project, and ended up with an unsanforized 17oz. super short slub cotton weft denim that rivals even the renowned Sugar Cane Okinawa. To produce a fabric like this, the yarns are spun at a much slower pace that gives the denim an extremely uneven texture while retaining the strength and body that a 17oz. jean should have.

As momentous as these jeans are, they are completed with final touches such as a gold sparkle selvedge ID paired with a gold foil stamped deerskin leather patch. Stealth arcs will show through as the fades begin, and cotton poly-core thread construction adds strength while retaining a traditional look.

Available in two fits for $345 at Self Edge.

Fade-of-the-Day-Mister-Freedom-Lot-64-Ranch-Blouse-Model-Front-Back

If you thought wearing heavy denim in a tropical climate was slightly worrying, then today’s fade will seem downright loony to you. Today’s fade is a well-worn Mister Freedom Lot 64 Ranch Blouse jacket courtesy of reader Yuttapon Saynongkham of Thailand. He’s worn this jacket for the past ten months while working at the job site as an engineer.

As a result, it’s achieved fading all over, especially in the arm creases all the way down to the rolled back cuffs. The elbows have also seen plenty of friction, causing them to drastically lighten. Despite this, the jacket seems to be holding up very well, with nary a broken stitch in sight. We think it will continue to serve Yuttapon well at work.

Mister Freedom Lot 64 Ranch Blouse

  • Fabric: Selvedge indigo denim
  • Weight: 13.75 oz.
  • Other features:
    • Wabash type twill lining in collar and pocket flap
    • Selvedge front panel fold
    • Original MFSC printed cloth label
    • Back Buckle
  • Available at: Mister Freedom for $369.95.

New-Balance-Dips-Their-Toes-Into-Their-Own-Fashion-Line-Shirts

Progression is only natural for smaller companies finding their way in the fashion industry. New Balance, however, is no small company, and recently made the fairly big announcement that they will be releasing an apparel line.

While details about the drop are still unavailable, what we do know is that the pieces are meant to reflect a modern aesthetic while being functional and fashionable. Consisting of bags, printed jerseys, and even blazers, New Balance was sure to use high quality materials for their new line – some of which even repel water and wick sweat. While you may not be running a marathon in these clothes, it will be interesting to see which direction the company will take in the future.

Blue Seven x Broken Homme Veg Tanned Leather Moc Toe Boot

Blue-Seven-x-Broken-Homme-Veg-Tanned-Leather-Moc-Toe-Boot-Sole

Many consider raw denim to be a blank canvas upon which you paint your life’s story in jeans. Blue Seven and Broken Homme take that same approach to their feet with a boot that’s ready for you to make your mark.

The Oklahoma City denim boutique has an annual tradition of “My Blue Seven“, where dozens begin their raw denim journey at the same time and then reconvene seven months later to see the results. This year, they’ve teamed up with bootmaker Broken Homme to create a slimmed down moc-toe boot with raw veg-tanned leather, which will patina hard and fast for a completely unique pair.

To get your hands on one of only twenty pairs, put in your pre-order for $299 at Just Ok.

Fade-of-the-Day-Levi's-501-STF-Front-Back

Courtesy of India’s Gautam Badveeti is a pair of starched Levi’s 501 STF (shrink-to-fit) after a year of wear. A much-debated preservation method, his process of wearing for a month (to create prominent creases) followed by a round of starching seems to have worked in his favor.

He subsequently gave them four washes and many liberal soaks to create a more vintage fade. Stellar lap fades are accompanied by some really nice whispering, whilst the honeycomb details are ever so subtle. Clear stack lines that are beginning to show, too. Overall, a great looking pair of Levi’s that will no doubt give him loads of more wear in the future.

Type III Trucker Jackets – Five Plus One

type-iii-trucker-jacket-five-plus-one-feat

Five Plus One is our weekly series of buyer’s guides. We pick a specific category and dig up five great options, along with one that’s a little outside the norm.

When people picture a denim jacket in their head, they most likely picture Levi’s Type III. Also known as a Trucker Jacket, the Type III is recognizable by the tandem trapezoid stitching on the front of the jacket, button closure, flapped front pockets, waist adjusters, and short body length. Beyond that, many different variations of Type III exist, and they are each great in their way.

Being that Trucker Jackets have such a cult following, there are a ton of options out there. No jacket is perfect for everyone, so we’ve put a list together of six great options: five that are pretty standard, and one that is a bit out there.

1) Unbranded: UB901 14.5Oz. Indigo Selvedge Jacket

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-1-Unbranded-UB901-14.5Oz-Indigo-Selvedge-Jacket

It may have taken years for Unbranded to release a Type III jacket, but it was worth the wait. It’s constructed from the same 14.5oz. selvedge denim as their mainline jeans, which ensures that it will develop high contrast fades very quickly. Unlike traditional trucker jackets, the UB901 includes front hand pockets and does not have waist adjusters. If there is one thing keeping this jacket from being the next go-to Type III, it is the large front buttons. Although they are the same size as those on the waistband of UB’s jeans, they look substantially larger on the jacket.

Available for $128 from Unbranded.

2) 3sixteen: Type III Denim Jacket in Shadow Selvedge

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-2-3Sixteen-Type-III-Denim-Jacket-in-Shadow-Selvedge

3sixteen’s shadow selvedge is their most recognizable denim, and so it is fitting to see it pair with one of Levi’s most recognizable styles. Like the UB901 above, the Shadow Selvedge Type III Jacket also forgoes waist adjusters and includes front hand pockets. 3sixteen also opted to modify the back design of this jacket with their crosscut yoke, which gives it a bit more personality than most other trucker jackets on the market.

Available for $265 from 3sixteen.

3) Iron Heart: Type III Selvedge

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-3-Iron-Heart-Type-III-Selvedge

Heavyweight denim jeans are one thing, but heavyweight denim jackets are another beast entirely. Iron Heart‘s Type III Selvedge Jacket is made from 21oz. denim. I can’t in good conscience suggest this as a starter piece, but it would make an excellent addition to any established denim collection. And hey, since it is the same denim used in IH’s 634s jeans, you can have a truly matching Canadian Tuxedo.

Available for $495 from Self Edge.

4) Naked and Famous: Selvedge Duck Canvas Jacket

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-4-Naked-and-Famous-Selvedge-Duck-Canvas-Jacket

A lot of denimheads worry about pulling off the denim-on-denim look, which is why a duck canvas jacket (in a non-indigo color) is such a sought after style. And if there is one thing that Naked & Famous is good at doing, it’s finding blind spots in the market and filling them. N&F’s Selvedge Duck Canvas Jacket is made from a 10oz. duck canvas, which may seem a bit lighter than usual; however, jackets are typically made with lighter weight materials, so it will still feel quite substantial.

Available for $180 from Blue Owl Workshop .

5) Burgus Plus: Type III Denim Jacket

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-5-Burgus-Plus-Type-III-Denim-Jacket

For many denimheads, the thing that sets one denim piece apart from another is the uniqueness of the fabric. If that sounds like you, then you may very well be interested in Burgus Plus‘s Type III Denim Jacket, which is made from a very irregular 14.5oz. Japanese selvedge. The fabric is deadstock from the 1950s, so once it has been used up this jacket will not be reproduced. To match the vintage denim, Burgus Plus chose to use a vintage fitting Type III pattern from the same era.

Available for $340 from Tate & Yoko.

Plus One – Monitaly: US Army Tent Trucker Jacket

Type-III-Jackets-Five-Plus-One-6-Plus-One-Monitaly-US-Army-Tent-Trucker-Jacket

Monitaly consistently produces some of the most interesting pieces on the market, and their Trucker Jacket is no exception. It is constructed from deadstock US Army tents, which makes it unique, durable, and non-reproducible once the materials are used up. There are a lot of olive trucker jackets on the market, but this one is the real standout. They won’t be around forever, so pick one up while you can.

Available for $300 from Standard and Strange.

Engineered Garments is headed for the woods. Woodlands that is, with their latest collaboration with Tanner Goods‘ retail arm. The Woodlands has long been an admirer and stockist of the Japanese-via-NYC brand, and their forces have combined in two fall-worthy pieces.

The first is a take on EG’s classic CPO (chief petty officer a.k.a. cool pockets only) shirt-jacket. It’s made from a wool herringbone weave, plus has a windowpane check on top of that. Next up is a version of their workshirt but done in a micro-blackwatch check. Both are available exclusively at Tanner Goods and The Woodlands retail locations, as well as their online shop in celebration of their 10 year anniversary – almost enough time to wear through a TG wallet.

Have a look for $228-$480 at The Woodlands.

Fade-of-the-Day-Lee-Japan-101B-Co-Front-Back

After nearly eight years of heavy wear, Sweden’s Bobo Fransen is the proud owner of some truly faded out Lee Japan 101B Co jeans. Surprisingly, the jeans have only been washed three times in that time period with almost no soaks recorded.

Designed to replicate waist overalls circa 1930, these jeans show some general wear and tear but have yet to require repairs despite the several dye loss. Though there isn’t much to see for honeycombs; the tight whiskers and heavy lap fades highlight the utilitarian nature of Bobo’s jeans. Simply put, these are a classic pair of workwear inspired jeans that have been put to the test.

Left Field NYC 12oz. Indigo Selvedge Bedford Cord Chinos

Left-Field-NYC-12oz-Indigo-Selvedge-Bedford-Cord-Chinos-Front-Back

When I was very young, my family moved from Dallas to a small UK town about 100km north of London called Bedford. I don’t know whether it was the relative isolation, bad feelings from the airbase in WWII, or something in the water, but they had nothing but loathing for Americans. People would shout “go home, yank!” in the streets, we’d have groceries knocked out of our hands at Tesco, and my brother’s teacher instructed him not to sing in the school pageant for his accent.

We left after a year, but the distaste for Bedford remains. That is, until these new 12oz. indigo selvedge Bedford Cloth chinos from Left Field hit the scene. Bedford cloth, the fabric, is just like corduroy but without the nep, so it’s hardwearing, but a bit better for warmer weather.

All the Left Field details remain: raised belt loops, 1940’s style metal buttons, and it’s all cut and sewn in USA. Best part, you don’t have to go to Bedford to buy them; they’re available for $220 at Left Field.

Naked & Famous “Ninja Shinobi” 16oz. Unsanforized Selvedge Denim

Naked-&-Famous-Ninja-Shinobi-16oz-Unsanforized-Selvedge-Denim-Full

Ninjas probably don’t wear jeans, but if they did, Naked & Famous is trying to corner that market with their Ninja Shinobi denim.

The pants are made from a deadstock 16oz. Japanese (obviously) indigo selvedge denim that’s unsanforized, so it will shrink, and N&F claims the denim will really pop with streaks and irregularities with that first wash as well. The interior has a purple Japanese kimono fabric lining and it’s all finished off with a scantily clad ninja on the leather patch. Unfortunately there are no cheat codes included for sick fades.

Sneak yourself a pair for $158 at Blue Owl.
